The FéNICS wishes to express its support to all scholars and professors in Turkey who struggle for freedom of speech and academic freedom. It denounces the inadmissible consequences of purges on Turkish researchers, especially on the youngest and most vulnerable ones. With this dismantling of academic freedom, with dismissals and persecutions, the state of emergency jeopardizes an independent, innovative and pluralist tradition of research. We salute the courage of all students, scholars, professors (especially Academics for Peace), of all actors from the intellectual, literary and artistic worlds who continue to raise their voices despite threats and intimidation.
In Belgium, we call upon/encourage academic institutions/universities to mobilise the media and to raise public awareness; we call upon public authorities to establish academic chairs for threatened scholars from Turkey, following the example of the Free University of Brussels (ULB). The solidarity movement started with other European universities must continue and be coordinated also in our country, if possible through the Council of francophone rectors and ARES (Académie de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur).
